Love them or hate them, the season for Christmas parties is just about here and if you haven’t booked anything for your office, book group, class parents or other random grouping of party folk, you need to get planning.

You might be adventurous and jump on a bus to central London. Alternatively, save the cab fare home by choosing something closer at hand.

Newington Green has always been a great spot for convivial dining and conversation. Situated between Stoke Newington, Canonbury and Dalston, The Green has been a residential area since the fifteenth century, and a home to well-known dissenters and intellectuals including Daniel Defoe and Mary Wollstonecraft.

These days you’ll find a choice of lively cafés, pubs, and a fair few destination restaurants. But if you’re stuck for ideas, here are a few places you might like to try:

The Alma

59 Newington Green Road N1 4QU

The Alma can trace its history back to 1866, when licensee Thomas J Phillips ran the premises. Fast-forward 150 years, and this popular pub offers a large selection of imported and local craft beers, real ales and ciders. There’s a sprinkling of Hollywood glamour too, thanks to the movie posters and film paraphernalia that decorate the walls and ceiling. And make sure you look out for Buster the cute pub dog. The menu includes stonebaked pizzas, pub classics and a selection of burgers.

The Cellars

125 Newington Green Road N1 4RA

Yum Yum

187 Stoke Newington High Street N16 0LH

This popular Thai in a listed Georgian building has an extensive menu to choose from, including chargrilled roasted duck topped with vegetables, plus an interesting list of cocktails.

The Black Pig with White Pearls

61 Stoke Newington High Street N16 8EL

If you fancy giving your Christmas night out a Spanish flavour, this cosy tapas bar with flamenco soundtrack is a good bet.

The Lady Mildmay

92 Mildmay Park, Newington Green N1 4PR

Another refurbished Victorian pub, this time specialising in rustic Mediterranean fare – pork souvlaki with potato, dill and broad bean salad or flat iron steak with lyonnaise potatoes, for example. The space is big and airy, so great for larger groups. There are five ales on tap, mostly from London brewers and all wines are available by the glass.
