Islington Gyms Worth Checking Out
If you’re looking to feel fitter and healthier in 2022, read on for eight of the best gyms around Islington, Angel and Highbury.
Many of the Islington gyms featured below have spa facilities or specialise in holistic wellness classes, such as yoga or pilates. Personal trainers are on hand to help you set and achieve your fitness goals and some are physio-led to help you back in training after an injury. There’s a whole social side to many gyms too – with cool lounges and places to eat as well as family-friendly facilities.
Here are eight gyms in Islington, and the surrounding area, that are worth checking out.
Devised by a former pilates instructor, Orangetheory promises to combine science, technology and coaching to give you the ultimate workout. Join a range of 60-minute sessions split into intervals of cardiovascular and strength training. What’s different about Orangetheory is that you’ll be wearing a heart rate monitor to track the intensity of your workout – you’ll even get a post-class summary to prove it. If you’d like to find out more, you can take your first class for free.
Five-minutes from Angel tube station, Fitness First – London Angel promises cutting-edge facilities including a cardio theatre, sauna and spin and hot yoga studios. Weekly group classes include body pump, circuits, boxing, and high intensity interval training (HIIT). Personal trainers are on-hand and there’s a beauty salon and members’ lounge.
Islington’s Virgin Active is currently undergoing a transformation. New features include a reformer pilates studio – with reformer beds whose pulleys and strings help you tone and shape. The grid floor, for cardio training, has 20kg battle ropes and the Queenax (described as a climbing frame for adults) to give you the ultimate workout. There’s a 25m pool and a cycle studio too, as well as a lounge and café. In fact, Virgin Active claims that for members, this gym is as good as a night out.
The Gym has 24/7 access and promises to be one of London’s best value facilities, offering contract-free membership from £28.99 a month. There are 170 pieces of high-tech kit and more than 40 weekly classes to choose from.
Situated on Islington’s Essex Road, this gym offers new members a complimentary 12-point Health MOT, before creating their bespoke fitness plan. There’s a 20m pool, sauna and full range of fitness classes and personal training support. Families note – this gym is for over-18s only.
If you’re on a budget, Fit4less Highbury might be the gym for you. With no membership fees or lengthy contracts, the gym aims to cut costs by doing the basics well. You won’t find a pool, sauna, or fluffy towels, but they do promise quality equipment, great personal trainers and a motivational atmosphere.
Another budget option, Puregym on the Holloway Road also offers contract-free membership as well as 220 pieces of high-quality kit and 50 free classes a week. Memberships start at £16.99 a month.
Join F45training and the claim is you’ll be training like the stars, with these challenging group classes, which originated in Australia. Choose from a range of interval training and circuits-inspired sessions, called things like Angry Birds, Hollywood and Panthers.
